Disabled Residents Receive Home Modifications Through HCHA’s Amy Young Barrier Removal Porgam

2021-07-23T06:26:45-05:00

The Harris County Housing Authority has begun housing rehabilitation on two homes in Humble and Channelview for homeowners who have household members with disabilities and are in need of home modifications to increase accessibility throughout their homes.

Every year, as an administrator of The Amy Young Barrier Removal Program (AYBRP) through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the HCHA is able to provide a one-time construction grant of up to $18,000 to a few homeowners who are persons with disabilities and are in need of home modifications to increase accessibility and eliminate hazardous conditions. Program beneficiaries must include a person with a disability, must have a household income that does not exceed 80% of the Area Median Family Income. The homes sought by the Authority must be constructed after the year 1978 and in good repair with foundation and roofing.

“We have an overarching goal of providing quality housing for the constituents of the unincorporated areas of Harris County in any way we can. The AYBRP is a unique way for us to fulfill that mission,” said Samson Babalola, HCHA’s Director of Real Estate Development. “Although the program only allows us to help a few families a year, we provide this service with the same standards of excellence and safety as we would with any of our larger development projects,” Samson said.

Harris County Housing Authority’s two current projects are expected to be completed early June.

Harris County Housing Authority Helps Voucher Holders Achieve Homeownership

2021-07-23T06:26:45-05:00

On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Harris County Housing Authority (HCHA) will host a Homebuyer Fair for a select group of its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holders who have been pre-screened and meet preliminary requirements for the HCHA’s Homeownership Program.

At the event voucher holders will have the opportunity to connect with lenders, realtors and the Harris County Community Services Department (HCCSD) who provides down payment assistance for those who qualify. To date, HCHA has helped 34 families on its HCV Program move from renting to homeownership. This year, HCHA has already helped one voucher-holding family close on a home in March and is expecting another family to close on their home in June. Additionally, HCHA is actively working with six other voucher-holding families completing the home buying process.

“The HCHA’s Homeownership Program is one of the programs where a family, in partnership with HCHA and private sector lenders, can make a significant difference in their own lives,” said Horace Allison, CEO of Harris County Housing Authority. “ As a catalyst, our ultimate goal is for HCHA to be a stepping stone for families to move up and out of the HCV Program by becoming economically self-sufficient. A client may enter the HCV Program as a renter but through their diligence, hard work, and assistance from staff and others, families have an opportunity to achieve the American Dream of homeownership and independence.”
